Building Efficient & Resilient Engineering Teams

by Forrest Tracy | at Minnebar 19

There is a lot of information about agile practices, SDLC efficiency, role definitions, etc., but there are very few holistic perspectives available on how to build engineering teams which are efficient, stable, and resilient. Building teams which can stay strong and focused during the various challenges and lifecycle phases of large projects is more important today than ever given the challenges in our industry. My perspective goes far beyond simply CICD ideas and I explore the convergence of technical best practices with knowing how to build a team culture of trust and collaboration. Proper interviewing, providing feedback, and accountability are universal leadership qualities, but these need to be applied in ways specific to tech. Building the skills as an engineering leader to create small and powerful teams is more crucial today than ever.

I am the Director of Engineering at Livefront

I followed an atypical path to become an engineering leader. I spent years in project management and retail sales gaining experience leading through layers of managers to achieve results. After switching careers to become a software engineer, I started as an individual contributor in tech. I soon became a Senior Engineer, and then I began getting opportunities to leverage my years of leadership experience in partnership with my technical expertise. Bringing together my diverse professional experiences has helped me to be successful as a leader with many different teams.
